Chess

Thinking ahead, one move at a time.

At St. Laurence’s, we are proud to offer pupils the opportunity to develop their strategic thinking, concentration, and problem-solving skills through chess. Chess is more than just a game, it encourages patience, logical thinking, and decision-making in a fun and engaging way.

Our afterschool chess club gives pupils the chance to play regularly and challenge themselves. Participation helps build confidence, sportsmanship, and a sense of achievement.

Learning and Development
Pupils learn the rules, tactics, and strategies of chess in a supportive environment. Whether they are beginners or more experienced players, lessons and club sessions help them improve their skills, think ahead, and plan carefully.

Competitions

At St. Laurence’s pupils have the chance to showcase their skills in a variety of chess competitions throughout the year. These events help to build confidence, focus, and resilience, while promoting good teamwork.

Benefits Beyond the Board
Chess supports learning across the curriculum, strengthening concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills that transfer to everyday tasks and academic work. Pupils also learn resilience and patience, valuable qualities both on and off the chessboard.
